Mapping the Arts Scene in Melbourne’s West

A quick breakdown what makes up the West's Arts Ecosystem

October 30, 2026

Melbourne’s diverse art scene is home to a network of art spaces stretching from the city centre to hidden gems across the West! Known as the cultural capital of Australia, it is home to a growing community of artists, galleries, arts organisations and arts workers.

Across Melbourne’s West – including the councils of Brimbank, Wyndham, Hobsons Bay, Maribyrnong and Melton – art spaces play an important role in sustaining and growing local creative communities. Local galleries offer a great starting point for immersing yourself in the arts scene, whether through the experimental work of an emerging artist or internationally recognised work of an experienced (a.k.a. established) artist!

So what are the roles within a gallery?

Gallery owners / directors make critical decisions about the gallery’s vision and direction, including which artists it exhibits, the exhibitions it presents and the programs it develops.

Curators develop exhibition concepts and determine how artworks are brought together and presented. They often work closely with artists to gain a deeper understanding of their practice and vision.

Art handlers, installers and technicians are responsible for safely handling, installing and presenting artworks, including lighting and technical equipment. Depending on the gallery and exhibition, artists may also undertake some of this work themselves.

Gallery Invigilators, attendants and visitor services staff help look after exhibitions and welcome audiences into the space. They may monitor artworks, assist visitors and answer questions about the exhibition. These roles can be paid positions or undertaken by volunteers.

Marketing and communications staff promote exhibitions, programs and events to attract visitors to the gallery and enhance the gallery’s profile. In commercial galleries, marketing can also support the promotion and sale of artworks.

These are only some of the roles that may be involved in running an art space. Depending on the organisation, you might also find educators, public programmers, producers, writers, designers and more. In smaller or artist-run spaces, one person may take on several of these roles at once or have a team of volunteers.

The National Association for the Visual Arts (NAVA) has a comprehensive list of occupations you might find across the fields of visual arts, craft and design if you want to explore the different pathways further: NAVA: Arts Worker Occupations

‍What are the different types of art spaces / art galleries?

All art spaces operate in different ways. Some are publicly funded and some operate as a business. Some are run by artists or council workers. Many galleries combine different models.

Public galleries

Public galleries are generally established, owned and funded by government at a local, state or federal level. Unlike commercial galleries, they don’t rely on selling artworks to operate.

The National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) is a well-known example at a state level. Locally, galleries such as Wyndham Art Gallery are council-run and provide exhibition and public-programming opportunities within their communities.

Public galleries often present curated exhibitions, education programs and community activities. They may show established artists alongside emerging and locally based artists.

Many public galleries also have permanent art collections. Collection, conservation, research, exhibition and education are important parts of their work. They help preserve cultural histories and highlight themes that resonate with the historical and present-day stories of the local area.

For audiences, public galleries can provide accessible opportunities to encounter art because their programs are designed to engage the broader public.

Commercial galleries

Commercial galleries operate as businesses. Their exhibitions are generally organised with the aim of promoting artists and selling their work.

When an artwork is sold, the income is typically divided between the artist and gallery, with the gallery using its share to support its ongoing operations.

Commercial galleries can play an important role in an artist’s professional career. Some artists enter into a longer-term relationship with a gallery through representation. Representation is a long-term partnership in which the gallery represents and promotes the artist.

Melbourne’s commercial galleries are concentrated in inner-city areas.

Artist-run initiatives (or ARIs / Artist-run spaces / Artist-run galleries)

Artist-run initiatives, often shortened to ARIs, are spaces or organisations established and managed by artists. They occupy an important position in the contemporary art ecosystem by creating, usually entry-level, opportunities for artists and curators. This helps them gain experience putting together exhibitions and showing work.

An emerging artist might have their first exhibition at an ARI. Another artist might use one to experiment with an idea that is unconventional or risky for a larger institution.

ARIs are often relatively small and may rely on funding through grants and fundraising. Many are sustained through volunteer roles. People volunteering in ARIs will often do so to gain experience working in the arts sector if they do not have any prior experience.

Trocadero Projects is an ARI located in Footscray. They present a diverse and experimental program of exhibitions and events by emerging and local artists and contributes significantly to the contemporary arts community in Melbourne’s West.

Not-for-profit and Community art spaces

Not-for-profit and Community art spaces are generally focused on creating programs and opportunities rather than generating profit through the sale of artworks. Their work can extend beyond exhibitions to include workshops, education, artist development and community engagement.

These spaces can operate through a combination of government funding, philanthropic support, grants, fundraisers and volunteer labour.

Footscray Community Arts is an example of an arts organisation that has a social change and community focus. The Substation in Newport is a multi-artform organisation that presents experimental work and programs connecting local, national and international audiences.

The arts scene is made up of these overlapping relationships like an ecosystem. An artist’s work can move through different parts of that arts ecosystem.

‍The Arts Ecosystem

A public gallery might commission an artist who previously exhibited through an ARI. An artist might develop work through a community program before exhibiting in a commercial gallery. A council might fund an artist-run project. A university student might volunteer at an arts organisation before eventually working there.

Mapping the arts scene in Melbourne’s West

This article is the first in a series exploring the arts scene across Melbourne’s West including the councils of Brimbank, Wyndham, Hobsons Bay, Maribyrnong and Melton.

We started by looking at different types of art spaces and the roles within them.

From there, we’ll explore galleries, organisations, initiatives and people across our community, alongside ongoing and upcoming exhibitions and events.

The series will conclude with a full map of the arts scene across Melbourne’s West, as a starting point for anyone looking to discover our diverse creative community!
